The Masonic Home of Missouri built the Masonic Museum, a permanent five themed gallery museum, to weave together the significance of the Fraternity, the history of the Grand Lodge of Missouri, while providing an opportunity to share the historically significant Masonic items from individuals, Lodges, and Chapters throughout the state of Missouri.
Civil War Cavalry Saber – 1863
The cavalry saber was one of the most common weapons used in the Civil War, particularly by the infantry. Macks Creek Lodge No. 433 transformed this Calvary saber into the Tiler’s sword. Brother Owen W. Stewart, Worshipful Master 1924, gave his father’s saber to this Lodge.
William F. Kuhn’s Royal Arch Apron
William F. Kuhn became Grand Master in 1903, although he served as acting Grand Master the previous year due to the illness and passing of Grand Master Yocum. PGM Kuhn was an active member of all branches of Masonry. In addition, he served on the Masonic Home Board and was one of the first members of the George Washington Masonic National Memorial Association.
Mark Twain Gavel – 1868
Mark Twain, born Samuel L. Clemens, was a novelist and humorist. During his travels to Europe and Asia, he had this gavel made and sent back to Polar Star Lodge No. 79, St. Louis, where he was initially a member. The inscription on the handle describes how it was made of cedar wood taken from the forests of Lebanon.
Masonic Home of Missouri Original Ledger with Incorporation Documents – 1885-1897
On July 12, 1886, the Masonic Home of Missouri became incorporated with the State of Missouri. The ledger includes the first By-Laws, meeting minutes and state documents that created the Masonic Home of Missouri.
Harry S. Truman’s Grand Masters Jewel – 1940-1941
Harry S. Truman was Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Missouri from 1940 to 1941, while serving as a United States Senator. On January 20, 1945, Truman took his oath of office to become Vice President. Less than three months later on April 12, President Roosevelt died. Truman became the 33rd President of the United States of America.
